I've heard that you have to find a quality brand so as to prevent mercury contamination and such....but what do they mean by that? wouldn't the stuff at the local pharmacy be okay? or do i need to splurge and get special 'premium' stuff? Basically, what do i look for to know i'm getting a quality omega-3 product? I just want to make sure that what i'm putting into my body is safe:)

Exercise and eat a healthy diet; you don't need it.

I am constantly amazed by the varying qualities of fish oil products today, with many offering little benefits and containing traces of toxins. Here you will learn what to avoid and what to look for in these important natural oils.
The main factors to look for are purity, freshness and high levels of DHA omega 3 fats.
To make sure that you do not ingest any toxins from the fish like heavy metals and dioxins, the oil should be distilled or pharmaceutical grade. This removes all the contaminants and concentrates the oil while keeping it in a natural ethyl ester form for easy absorption by the body.
Many oils today are stale or rancid and companies use tricks like enteric coatings, colouring and additives to disguise the taste and smell. The best oil will only have a faint ocean aroma and will have been handled correctly from boat to bottle.
If the oil has low oxidation then it will provide more benefits and not lead to those unpleasant fishy burps or repeating that put so many people off! Proper handling and storage are the key elements in any process and the company's website should provide some information for you along with a Certificate of Analysis to provide full traceability.
As the qualities of fish oil vary so much, it is important to take your time to research the products first and another important area is the levels of the two main fats, DHA and EPA.
Most companies still use much more of the less effective EPA as it is cheaper to use and easier to source and they are not up to date on recent research. Ultimately they are looking to increase their profits to the detriment of your health.
Ideally, you want to get at least 250mg of DHA in each 1000mg fish oil capsule as this provides most of the benefits and is converted by the body into Resolvin D2 - a powerful anti-inflammatory chemical that helps to protect you against many diseases.
DHA is also present in a high proportion in the brain and as the body cannot manufacture omega 3, quality fish oils provide a valuable source to keep the brain healthy and ward of degenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.
Now you know how the important qualities of fish oil vary so much and how to select the purest and most effective ones, why not include them in your daily diet and enjoy all their many important health benefits.
